Title: A Murder of Magpies
Publication date: October 28, 2014
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Sarah Bromley

Winter in Black Orchard, Wisconsin, is long and dark, and sixteen-year-old Vayda Silver prays the snow will keep the truth and secrecy of the last two years buried. Hiding from the past with her father and twin brother, Vayda knows the rules: never return to the town of her mother’s murder, and never work a Mind Game where someone might see.

No one can know the toll emotions take on Vayda, how emotion becomes energy in her hands, or how she can’t control the destruction she causes. But it’s not long before her powers can no longer be contained. The truth is dangerously close to being exposed, placing Vayda and her family at risk.
Until someone quiets the chaos inside her.

Unwanted. That’s all Ward Ravenscroft has ever been. To cope, he numbs the pain of rejection by denying himself emotions of any kind. Yet Vayda stirs something in him. He can’t explain the hold she has on him–inspiring him with both hope and fear. He claims not to scare easily, except he doesn’t know what her powers can do. Yet.

Just as Vadya and Ward draw closer, she finds the past isn’t so easily buried. And when it follows the Silvers to Black Orchard, it has murder in mind.

Sarah Bromley lives near St. Louis with her husband, three children, and two dogs. She likes the quiet hours of morning when she can drink coffee in peace, stare into the woods behind her house, and wonder what monsters live there. When she’s not writing or wrangling small children, she can be found volunteering at a stable for disabled riders.

My Thoughts:

The Cover: This was a very interesting cover; it didn't really sell me on the book, but it reminded me of the covers for the old murder mysteries. So that's what I was expecting.

The Plot:  Totally not what I was expecting, but I definitely loved this book. The storyline was amazing, moved at a great pace and kept me interested throughout. There were constant “explosions”, things I never would have expected. I loved the plot twists, and the parts where the story went back to a past time. Sometimes, when a book jumps back and forth like that, it can be hard to follow. But I didn't find that at all with A Murder of Magpies and liked the way Sarah told the story.

The Characters: I loved Vayda from the very first page. A typical, angsty teenage, with a big secret. Her twin brother Jonah is not so secretive or scared of their “gifts”. But, of course, they are outcasts at school and everyone seems to be, to some degree, an enemy. And then there's Ward. If there was ever a character you just wanted to rescue, it would be Ward. And him and Vayda together? That's not easy for either of them, but I so wanted them to work out.

Is it Worth Reading?:  Yes, I loved every minute of it. I had a very busy couple of days, with appointments for the kids and such. But every chance I got, I read; even if it was only for 5 minutes. Which I don't normally do, because my 3 years old beloved Kobo is so slow! Every time I looked at my Kobo, I thought, “Oh yeah, I wonder......” I definitely recommend A Murder of Magpies to readers of YA fantasy, horror, romamce and supernatural and give it 5 out of 5 crossbows!
