About the book: How do you heal from your past when you're still trapped within it?
I lost myself the night of the party. Just like that, my innocence and my sanity were torn away.
I would like to say that time heals all wounds, but it doesn't. And I would like to say that falling in love is what rescued me, but it wasn't. Nobody told me what to expect in the coming days and weeks and months after conceiving a rapist's child. Years later, my wounds are still just as fresh as the night they were made. It would be so easy to disappear and allow the memories to consume me.
But that's the choice, isn't it? To live instead.
**This book contains rape triggers. Discretion is advised.

About the author: Allison was born and raised in the mountains of Oregon, birthed of the crisp, clean air and rainy forests. She now resides in Oklahoma City, though she is still thoroughly attached to her home and finds much inspiration for her stories whenever she has a chance to return. As the spouse of a police officer and a full-time photographer, she is on her toes 24/7.Purchase Links

My Thoughts:

The Cover: I really liked the cover of The Choice. It's a pretty cover of a young girl, our protagonist I think, looking at us through a glass. Like looking in the mirror when you have wiped it, after a hot shower. The colors are soft and muted, yet pop in just the right places. Our protagonist looks like someone you could relate to. I would have read this book based on the cover alone.

The Plot:  The storyline to The Choice was certainly not a lighthearted summer read. It was very in depth, descriptive and bought the reader right into May's world. It was definitely a very gripping plot, that was absorbing, and engaging. It moved along nicely and while the subject matter was difficult, the story was entertaining and thought provoking. While I did find the Then and Now parts left me guessing, I did still enjoy reading about her future. It helped knowing that the horrible things she was going through in the Then parts led her to the better Now parts.

Characters:  Miss Kennedy has created some amazing, amusing and engaging characters. Although, it was heartbreaking reading as May went through what she had to go through, it was enlightening as she grew from the experience and learned how strong she really was. I loved Alex. He was that sweet understanding support that we all need, no matter what we are going through. Even in his toughest times, he was that shoulder for May and it made her realize that she was not alone. That though their tragedies were different, they could still help one another. It was heartening to read as they both took control of their lives again and refused to let their tragedies break them.

Is it Worth Reading?:  Definitely! It would be a very difficult read for survivors of rape or assault, but I found hope in this story. It was not all about that horrible attack, but about the recovery and the person May chose to become. I sobbed throughout this story. It was just so well written and the characters were so real. It is one of those stories that grabs you by the heart and demands your attention. I highly recommend The Choice and give it 5 out of 5 crossbows.
